OCTOBER was a very busy month for COACHING & CELEBRATION. We ended with our annual Halloween Bash!
PRIVATE COACHING with Nick Kosovich following our “Dancing With the Stars Showcase” was awesome! He was so much fun to work with and quite informative. Here are a few Tips from Nick; Actions in dancing are Traveling, Bending, Stretching, Twisting, Contracting and Turning. “W-E-S-T” means Weight (Heavy or Light), Energy (Bound or Free), Space (Direct or Flexible), Time (Sustained or Rapid). Ask your Teachers in your next lesson to review these tips with you. Sign up early!!!

MEDAL BALL “SCHOOL FIGURES” TESTING (Medal Ball Checkout), BANQUET, DANCE & WEEKEND ACTIVITIES – Lynn Sevick, International Coach and Arthur Murray Competition Adjudicator and also the daughter of Vicki Venka, joined us for Medal Ball. Throughout the world, dance schools use medal standards because students with goals become better, more polished dancers in less time. Arthur Murray provides medalist students the opportunity to graduate from various levels they have achieved throughout the year. “SCHOOL FIGURES” TESTING was on Friday evening October 26th and the SEMI-FORMAL MASQUERADE BALL which celebrates our students moving onto the next level in their dancing was held on Saturday October 27th at the Maryland Parkway Location. Our Jack & Jill Dance Winners; 1st Place Kayla & Dave, 2nd Gloria & Tim, 3rd Lisa & Chris, 4th Kelly & Connor, 5th Cynthia & Tony and 6th Virginia & Doug. Our Professional Show was performed by Justin, Allison, Adam, Nova and Jonathan. Thanks for a wonderful showing of your talent. Sunday October 28th CRITIQUES, BRUNCH & GROUP CLASS. Sunday morning at 11:00am Lynn, our esteemed adjudicator, conducted Student Critiques, Brunch was served at 1pm which included Gloria’s incredible homemade coffee cake!!!! Group class on Rumba given by Lynn was held directly after Brunch. PRIVATE COACHING October 29th -31st with Lynn Sevick following the Medal Ball was also excellent! It is always an honor and a delight to have Lynn in our studios. SPECIAL THANKS to Joni Stevens who held an ASSOCIATE BRONZE LEVEL “SCHOOL FIGURES” CLASS, Sunday, October 21st at our Durango Location. This class prepared students for Medal Ball Checkout. The focus was on the Top 5 Steps and Techniques for the 6 Main Ballroom Dances; Smooth Dances–Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango; Rhythm–Rumba, ChaCha & Swing. Well done, had awesome test results!!

ANNUAL HALLOWEEN BASH – Monday, October 29th. Thanks to everyone who dressed up and made this a highly animated DANCING EXTRAVAGANZA! Best Costume was presented to Lauren Pena as “Tina Turner”.

GROUP CLASSES WEST – M-F 6:45pm – Our Group Classes are fantastic! Come and join Xiaoqian, aka “JC” Wiltshire, our Dance Director at the Durango location. Monday through Friday she conducts a group class on one particular dance of the week. Class begins at 6:45pm. Saturday at 12:15, Greg conducts a “Technique” Group Class on the weekly dance. Check the Calendar for the weekly dances.This Month: Bolero, Waltz, Rumba, Samba, Quickstep, Paso Doble
GROUP CLASSES EAST – M-F 7:30pm – Come and join Adam Stuckey, our Dance Director at the Maryland Parkway location. Monday through Friday he conducts a group class on a different dance every day. Saturday at 1:00pm there is an additional class. Check the Calendar for specific classes. Every Month there is Social Salsa on Wednesdays. This Month: 6 Basic Ballroom dances, lots of Latin & Specialty dances such as V. Waltz, Bachata, Bolero, Samba, Mambo, Merengue, Hustle, WC Swing, Lindy, Polka, C&W Swing & 2 Step.
“MADS CLUB”, Murray After Dark Social Club is an Out on the Town Evening with your Teachers and Friends. It is held the first Wednesday of every month at 10:00pm at a designated local Lounge location. Last month we danced with a live band in the Showroom at the South Point Casino. It was a blast. Ask your Teachers how to join MADS Club and get ready to dance the night away.
ARTHUR MURRAY STUDIO, PHOENIX, ARIZONA – This is our Sister School in Division 5. We are also rivals at competitions. As a long time tradition, Holly Udy has invited Greg Darrough to join them Friday, November 2nd–4th to be the Adjudicator of their Medal Ball Testing.
TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS - Starts November 5th. This is an Arthur Murray International Promotion for Dance Activities & Enrollments. By SPONSORING YOUR TEACHER you will be invited to participate in special activities and earn bonus lessons.
THANKSGIVING WEEKEND - We are closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday November 22nd. POT LUCK”, PAJAMA & CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING PARTY! - Friday evening at the Maryland Parkway location. “Bring your favorite leftovers or something fun to eat and ring in the holiday spirit with an evening of dancing, good cheer and holiday decorating.

“DANCING WITH THE STARS” began September 24th Monday at 8pm on Channel 13 followed by the Tuesday results show at 9pm. The emergence of this program has introduced the WORLD OF BALLROOM DANCING to millions of viewers and many of our students. As a result, we will have more incredible people to dance with and have increased our staff members. Marriann Nelson, one of our staff members, is the mother of last season’s “Dancing With the Stars” Champion, Julianne Hough. Julianne danced last season with Apolo Ohno and is currently dancing this season with Two-Time Indy 500 winner, Helio Castroneves. Marriann’s son Derek Hough is also dancing this season with Actor, Jennie Garth. Sibling rivalry?
ARGENTINE TANGO MILONGAS & TANGO WORKSHOPS. Ven a Bailar el “Tango del Corazon” or shall we say “Come Dance the “Tango of the Heart”. Hugo Latorre & Miriam Gittelman are from Argentina. They have been hosting Argentine Tango Milongas (Dance parties) at our Durango studio on the third Saturday of every month at 9:30PM. Their weekly Workshop is on Thursday evenings at 8:15pm at the Durango Studio. NO class will be held on Thursday 22nd due to Thanksgiving. Tom & Tanya Smith are also hosting Milongas at the Maryland Parkway Studio on specified Saturday evenings at 10:00PM. Check the Calendar each month for dates. This is a great introduction to one of the most romantic dances. All events are $15.00.
